WAGE AND HOUR ISSUES

States can pass additional protections if they desire and many states have approved a higher minimum wage. In Utah, the minimum wage is the same as the federal ($7.25 per hour). Minors must be paid the minimum wage, but employers may pay them $4.25 during the first 90 days of employment. If an employee collects tips, they can be paid $2.13 per hour so long as the tips they earn bring them up to the minimum wage.

Wage and hour laws also regulate overtime pay. Unless certain exceptions apply, after an employee works 40 hours for the week, time-and-a-half must be paid. (Note that special laws exist to regulate the hours and working conditions for minors.) Employers must post certain notices in public locations and keep basic payroll records to be in compliance.
